Badminton PNG and Special Olympics PNG sign Memorandum of Understanding

On Tuesday 28 June, Badminton Papua New Guinea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Special Olympics Papua New Guinea as both parties aim to enhance the opportunities in badminton among players with intellectual disabilities.

Badminton Oceania’s Coaching and Development Officer, Ian Bridge, recently joined the team from Badminton Papua New Guinea to assist with the planning and delivery of in-country programmes, which included the discussions and the development of strategic outcomes for this MOU which include:

  • To support two players from PNG to compete in the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023;
  • To share knowledge and experience to provide opportunities for players with intellectual disabilities.

The partnership builds on the wider Memorandum of Understanding that Badminton Oceania signed with Special Olympics Asia-Pacific in January 2022, to commit greater resources across targeted member countries to increase badminton-related opportunities.

“We look forward to developing our relationship with Special Olympics Papua New Guinea and increasing opportunities in badminton. In particular, to see two players from Papua New Guinea make history by representing our flag and the sport at a Special Olympics World Games for the very first time,” said Badminton Papua New Guinea President, Kinivanagi Karo.
