Oceania Athletics is delighted to welcome Sharon Toako as a Sports Administration Intern to the OAA Office. Sharon was an international javelin thrower for Papua New Guinea and throughout her athletic career, trained and competed in all four throwing disciplines: javelin, discus, shot put, and hammer throw. While she valued the challenge and technique required in each event, javelin was always her favourite. Sharon said, “There was something powerful and freeing about the moment the javelin left my hand and soared through the air—it felt like flying.”
After completing her studies and celebrating key milestones in her athletic career, she transitioned into coaching. Becoming an assistant coach allowed her to give back in a meaningful way. Sharon worked closely with Coach Brett Green, who guided me—learning from his experience while developing her own style. More than just a coach, Sharon wanted to be a mentor—someone who believed in the potential of young athletes and helped them grow not just in sport, but in life. Sharon focused on creating an environment of support and encouragement, where athletes felt seen, heard, and inspired. Sharon taught the athletes the same values that shaped her: hard work, consistency, and the courage to keep going. Watching them build confidence, set goals, and succeed has been one of the most rewarding parts of her journey.
Her internship with the Oceania Athletics Association was another turning point. It gave Sharon a broader perspective on athletics across the region and allowed her to contribute in meaningful ways—whether through organizing events or identifying emerging talent. It reinforced her belief that building strong athletes means building strong communities.
On her internship, Sharon, expressed thanks to OAA, “I am especially thankful to the Oceania Athletics Association for the incredible opportunity to intern with them—an experience that broadened my understanding of the sport beyond the field.”
