A highlight for Oceania Cycling’s Pacific Development Program in 2022 was the inaugural staging of the Pacific Cup for Road Cycling, which was held in Guam in December. It was the first-time inter-island cycling competition had been staged in the Pacific in more than two decades.
Riders from seven island federations – men and women – contested the 30km Individual Road Time Trial and the Road Race, which was staged over 100km on a circuit that featured some stunning coastal scenery from the island of Guam as a backdrop.
The gold medals over the four events were shared by New Caledonia, Tahiti and Guam. Northern Mariana Islands were the only other country able to get onto the podium against some tough competition that also included riders from Samoa, Fiji and Vanuatu.
The Pacific Cup competition also served as an opportunity to present some training opportunities and with the support of International Solidarity and a Regional Sports Grant from OSFO/ONOC, programs were delivered in officiating and coaching as well as developing riders’ race-craft skills.
The event was a great success and now Pacific cycling federations are looking forward to the next Pacific Cup event in Tahiti in September this year, with Mountain Bike Cross Country to be added to the Road cycling disciplines.
