Over the last two years, Badminton has soared in popularity in the Cook Islands, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Cook Islands remain as one of the few countries in the world that have maintained their COVID-free status, which has allowed the non-contact sport to capitalise on the situation.
With the quarantine-free travel bubble resuming between the Cook Islands and New Zealand, Badminton Oceania’s Coaching and Development Manager, Robbie Thackham, travelled to Rarotonga to introduce AirBadminton to the country in collaboration with Badminton Cook Islands. The AirBadminton launch took place at the Edgewater Resort and Spa with gorgeous views and beautiful ocean scenery.
With the assistance of the venue’s General Manager and several activity staff, the AirBadminton equipment was quickly set up at the resort’s sand area near the beach and swimming pool. Hotel guests were welcomed to the open opportunity of experiencing AirBadminton for the first time in the sunshine, after being taught the basic rules of the game. With portables nets, equipment and a more durable shuttlecock, the initiative allows anyone to play badminton outside. The games is well suited for the Cook Islands, where residents can out enjoy the game on a stunning beach.
In addition, Badminton Oceania is pleased to announce that the Edgewater Resort and Spa will be the venue of the Oceania Masters in Paradise 2022, the first Master’s badminton team event hosted in partnership with Cook Islands Badminton. The increased interest from older demographics also laid the foundations for the pilot international Masters (over 35s) tournament.
