OSFO extends sincere thanks to Helen Brownlee AM, who has announced that after much soul-searching, she will step back from her involvement with the ONOC Equity Commission, effective following the 2025 ONOC General Assembly in Guam.
“I do so with immense pride in what we have achieved, and that Oceania is recognised by the IOC as the lighthouse for gender equity across the world. As I reflect on over thirty-five incredible years with ONOC in the Pacific, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the ONOC Executive, my Commission colleagues and the Oceania NOC fraternity who have been part of this journey. Your support, collaboration, and friendship have been invaluable, and I am truly thankful for the opportunities we’ve shared,” Helen said.
“Together, we’ve accomplished so much to empower women and girls through sport. After a tentative beginning, we’ve moved from the initial Walk & Talk activities, to establishing Women & Sport Committees in each NOC, raising awareness of gender equity, supporting our athletes to compete on the world stage, engaging male allies, delivering workshops and creating countless opportunities for women and girls to be their best selves through sport — many taking on leadership positions in their NOC or sport. Each achievement has been a testament to the power of teamwork and shared purpose.
“While it’s bittersweet to close one chapter, the Equity Commission is in a good space, and I will continue to be an advocate and supporter of the exciting initiatives they have planned and indeed already commencing to implement.”
Helen will remain involved in the region with the ONOC Education Commission and as a member of the IOC GEDI Commission, as well as her life-long relationship with the Oceania Canoe Association.
“It has been a privilege to work with so many talented and passionate individuals, and it has been a joy to celebrate the highs, navigate the challenges, and create a positive impact together around gender equity. These experiences, the friendships made, and memories forged along the way will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for being part of this incredible chapter of my life and for your ongoing support.”
On behalf of OSFO and our members, we are incredibly grateful to Helen for her tireless contributions to sport across the Oceania region. All the best!
